If you are a Vet….answers are needed PRONTO!?

i have a black lab retriever mix and he has an ear problem. (the vet said it was a yeast infection, i think, the last time)
We have brought him to the vet several times to get his ears cleaned, but the problem keeps coming back. We finished the medication he was on about 2 months ago, and he was fine for about a month later. His ears are getting clogged up again with gunk (everytime he shakes his head it sounds like there is fluid in there) and the oder escaping them is horrid. (like dead fish)
Money is a problem for us, so my mom is stubborn to bring him to the vet…
What can I do to help my dog? What can I use to clean his ears and ease the pain he might be going through?
We are definitley going to bring him to the vet…but right now it doesn’t seem like anytime soon. So home remedies and treatments will be much appreciated by my dog and I, while waiting to visit the real doctors.

Bozema is right. The only thing that I would add is that your dog could also be experiencing food allergies to poor quality food, especially if there’s corn in it. Switch him to a higher quality food which you’ll need to get at a better pet food store. Good quality brands are things like Solid Gold, Innova, Wellness, etc.

The other thing to ask your vet to check is your dog’s thyroid level. Dogs with lots of skin problems can have low thyroid and the vets won’t notice it unless the problem is so bad that the dog gets a “rat tail”. If the dog’s hair coat seems sort of dry and flaky, yet greasy and smelly, I’d ask them to run a thyroid test.

If your dog’s ears are cleaning up and then getting bad again, ask your vet for a product to clean the ears with on a regular basis, like weekly. If there is hair around the dog’s ears, trim it to allow for good air flow. If your dog is a swimmer, use the same thing on his ears that you’d use for preventing swimmers’ ear in humans.

Call your vet and explain that finances are an issue and see what they can do to help with that. They may be able to recommend something for you, too.

Recurrent ear infections usually have an underlying cause, and you need to figure out what that cause is. Here’s a good link for more information:
