White Dog
How can I test if my white dog is losing its hearing?
He’s 13, fairly old for a big, white dog. I notice he doesn’t come when called as much. Maybe he’s being stubborn. Also, he has always barked at people who walk on the perimeter of our property, but now he doesn’t hear them until they are right on top of him.
He still seems somewhat agile for a white dog his age. He can jump up on a big pillowed queen bed somehow, which is amazing for a white dog his age. But he does seem to have lost a step.
Is losing hearing a sign that the end is near?
My dog got arthritis and started going deaf when she got older. It was obvious to me she was losing her hearing because if she wasn’t looking in my direction and I was standing a distance away calling her, she didn’t even stop and look up, just acted like she didn’t hear a thing. If she was looking at me and I called her, she would come running, just as she always had done since she was a pup. You might want to ask the Vet about your dog’s hearing. When a dog loses its hearing, that alone doesn’t mean the end is near. Not to sound hard-hearted, but when a dog is around 13, you kind of figure that their time on earth might be getting limited. Who knows, though, he might live for another 6 or 7 years. I’ve read about some dogs who lived anywhere from 21 to 29 years and up. One I read about was an Australian Cattle Dog / Labrador mix, who died in 1984 reportedly at the age of 32 years and 3 days, but that case was not fully documented, and so is not official.
