Pet Fish in Cold Weather?
I’d like to have a pet fish. Just a little, low maintenance one that I can keep in a bowl (not a ginormous aquarium!).
However, our house gets very cold, especially at night. Some mornings we wake up and it’s 48 degrees (Fahrenheit) in the house! I don’t want that to kill my poor little fish.
I am looking for a fish that…
-withstands cold weather
-doesn’t need a huge aquarium
-doesn’t need other fish as “friends”
What are your suggestions?
I don’t think I want a goldfish, and nothing that’s hard to come by, just something that I could find at say PetSmart, or PetCo, which ever.

It’s understood that I don’t mean a bowl as in a bowl you would eat from that’s really shallow, right?
I’ve seen plenty of people keep fish in bowls and the fish have lived for years. Or they keep a fish in a little plastic tank.
I just want to know if there’s any fish that can withstand the cold, WITHOUT having to buy a heater.
All “cold water” fish can withstand the cold. That would be goldfish, koi, snails, pretty much anything you can put in a pond… but they cannot live in a bowl. All fish get their air from oxygen in the water and stagnant water doesn’t have enough plus its great to breed disease. The only fish that usually stay in bowls are Betta’s. You might want to think twice about wanting no heater. You can go to walmart and pick up a 10 gallon started tank with everything you need except plants and rocks for under $30.00. That is crazy cheap and you can choose from different types of fish and they will be happier. Just a though.
