Taking by bunny out for a walk(on a harness), tips and advice please?

I just got this adorable harness from Petco for my dwarf bunny Precious
this is the first time I’m taking her outside, so I’m a bit paranoid. Advice please?
i rarely see dogs at my park, there are ducks and goose though

You are going to want to allow the rabbit to get used to the harness. Put it on her while in the house and see how she reacts to it. It is better to start in the house b/c there is less stress(the environment is familiar). Allow her to get used to the feel of the harness and leash. Some rabbits will panic and struggle, and this can be dangerous b/c of their fragile bones.

When you move to the outside, start in a quiet area where there are no animals or people. You will be surprised how many people will want to pet her if you go to the park. Make sure she is comfortable with people touching and crowding around her. Be aware that many people are very inconsiderate, and will allow young child to practically manhandle your rabbit. Set rules for people when they are touching her. For example, “If your child is gentle he can pet the rabbit.” If it starts to get out of hand simple tell people that she is getting stressed and they have to stop petting her. I have had huge crowds around my rabbit at the park. Children can be especially rough. Paris(my rabbit), is very tolerant of everything, from dogs, to children. However, some rabbits will stress very easily and can die as a result. Make sure if people are touching her you put her welfare first. I have had issues in the past of people using my rabbit to see how their dog would react, and they then allow their dog to bark at her, charge at her, etc. One dog even bit her in the face(which was the last time I allowed small yippy dogs near her. I now set the rule that if the dog can behave, they can come near her. However, Paris is a Dog Lover. She often seeks out a dog friend at the park and will not leave them alone. Most rabbits do not like dogs, and therefore should be kept at a distance. My rabbit was raised around dogs so she likes them. I would suggest not allow your rabbit around gods unless you know she tolerates them.

I would also suggest using the harness in the yard for awhile. This way you know she is not going to slip it, and if she does at least she is in the yard. I also always place a collar with a license on Paris when she is on the harness. I use a Small Dog collar(made for dogs like yorkies, or chihuahuas. This way if she was to slip the harness, at least she has a collar.

When you do walk her, be aware it is not like walking a dog. She is not going to able to be lead around. She won’t follow you when you go, it is the other way around. Put the harness on her and then follow where she wants to go. This also lessens the risk of her pulling out of the harness, as you will be behind her. I would also suggest getting a long leash to attach to the harness, rabbits hop fast and you don’t want her running to the end of the lead and it jerking her to a stop.

I have been “walking” my rabbit since she was 6 months old(she’s 5 now). I have never had any real issues with it(except for inconsiderate people). It took her awhile to get used to the harness, but now she loves it. Some days she will run for hours in the park going back and forth. Other days she prefers to just sit or lay in the grass(I bring a book).

You simply need to be careful at first. When you know her reaction to the harness, you will be less paranoid. If she does not like it, don’t push the issue, some rabbits just don’t take to it.
