How often should a Vet see my horse and how much should I expect to pay for a routine visit?
I am looking into getting my own horse. If you could tell me about an average cost for a routine vet visit, I would be so thankful!
The best way to know costs for sure is to contact a few equine vets in your area and find out what they charge for ranch calls and for services like vaccines,worming, teeth floating, exams and the like.
Each vet will charge different amounts for ranch calls based on distance from the home office to the ranch. Exams can vary depending on the time and length of the exam. Vaccines are usually pretty straight forward. I do my own since I am comfortable giving shots. I also worm (de worm) my horse but in my case I don’t need to de worm more then twice a year since my mare never leaves the property (retired and elderly mare) and I get no horse “visitors”.
I do however have the vet out once a year to do a complete physical exam and to have her teeth checked. Floated if needed and if she is due for vaccines, I’ll have them give them to her.
I have owned my mare since she was 4 1/2 and I watched her being born, so I’ve known her all her life. I am comfortable with having a vet out once a year. There are some years I may have him out more if my mare is dropping weight and having a hard time gaining it back or more sore then usual.
The last vet call cost me about $250. I was able to split the vet call with my neighbor for her horse up the street and I had the vet give my mare her yearly physical exam and she had to have her teeth floated with sedation and her vaccines since she was due anyway. Usually my vet calls are around $80-ish depending on gas prices. That is just for the ranch call and the exam.
How often the vet comes out to see your horse could also depend on your boarding facility if you board the horse. Some facilities require vet’s to give vaccines and dewormers twice a year or more. Over all though, I would say for once a year minimum if you give your own shots, twice a year if your vet give the vaccines.
