Etiquette question: I know the bottom button should be unbuttoned on a suit jacket, but what about a vest?

The man at Men’s Wearhouse said that proper etiquette for suit wearing is to unbutton the bottom button of a suit coat at all times. Sometimes I wear a vest under my suit and then take off my jacket while I’m in the office. Should the bottom button on my vest be unbuttoned at all times like the bottom button on a suit coat should always be unbuttoned?

The man at the Men’s Wearhouse is correct, you never button the bottom button of a suit jacket, blazer, or sports jacket.

And as a former 11 year manager of the Men’s Wearhouse, I can tell you that the vest should be buttoned. If the vest is cut properly, it should “break” just above the fly on the suit pants. Therefore, if you leave the bottom button unbuttoned, your shirt and the top of the wast band of the suit pant would be visible at the bottom of the vest –A definite no no…
