when your pet(s) died, did you give them a proper ceremony and buried them in your backyard or where?

what kind of pet was it? where/what did you do with your deceased pet? did you build your own make-shift pet coffin or in a shoebox or just buried it as is? what if the pet owner prefers their pet to be buried close to home and not at the local pet cemetery then how deep are you suppose to bury it as to not attract bugs but it won’t be too deep and hit unforseen pipes in the ground? is it sanitary or it will rot and smell if the casket isn’t deep enough underground? I don’t have a pet, I was just curious as to what people do in this situation. your opinions? thanks.

in the last 3 yrs, i have lost 3 dogs and 2 cats, all elderly and to various causes. they are my babies and it has been the same for each. my father is a retired carpenter, so with each of my pets he has made a casket and lined it with satin. i engraved the pet’s name, dates and a small quote on the top of each casket. i made a small blanket and wrapped them in it so they wouldn’t be cold, pictures of us so they wouldn’t be lonely, a treat so they wouldn’t be hungry. (crazy, i know, yet it makes me feel better to do this for them.) 4 of the 5 animals were euthanized so i had enough time to make garden stones with their pawprints before losing them. the stones are out back in the corner of my yard where they are buried, with a bench and wildflowers growing.

we knew there were no pipes or cables in this part of the yard, so that was not an issue. we buried our pets down to where the top of the casket would be about 2-3 ft down. it is not legal to bury animals within our city limits for sanitation reasons, and there is no pet cemetary here, so many people don’t have much of an option. if i didn’t have my own place, i’d opt for cremation and having the ashes all in one place here. but as it is, i like having them buried and knowing they’re still here with me, even if it does mean i’m breaking the law.
