Is my auto focus broken?

I have an Ultrasonic 28-105 zoom lens. Sometimes (and more often lately) the auto focus will jump back and forth like it’s trying to locate the right focus. Not sure if this is normal. Is it broken or is there something simple I can do to stop it?

Check the glass is clean both ends of the lens….greasy marks can throw off the camera’s autofocus, and make sure that the contacts between camera and lens are clean and bright.
