Tropical Dog Shampoo

Hi I got A dog question? I have A Weimaraner and on the sides of her stomach its kind of red itchy skin anyone?

know what this can be? I took A picture. I took her to the Vet and the doctor prescribed genesis tropical spray, pill medication and dog shampoo I used it and it went away and now is coming back. I dont think its, Thyroid cause Shes seems fine can it be because of the weather causing it to be dry and raw? She doesnt have hairloss. When I took her to the vet he charged me 300 and aint really got the money anybody have any ideas or solutions? I Also have A German Sheperd and his skin and coat is fine just my Weimaraner coat is fine just the skin gets a little red and dry maybe A doggy lotion work? Thanks.

It looks very irritated. It could be bug bites (biting flies, chiggers, etc.) but it is possible she has an allergy either food or grass. Grass or some “contact surface” allergy, is the most likely since the underside is the only problem area, you’ve indicated.

Have you changed her food or changed any medications or started a new Heartworm pill, or flea product? Has her bedding changed, or could she have a problems with the detergent used to wash her bedding? You might try using Dreft (btw) it is the best for babies with skin issues. Carpet freshener sprinkles, or carpet cleaners, floor mop cleaners might also be culprits. You may have to use a process of elimination.

Barring anything I mentioned above as possible, sounds like you can’t afford to have her allergy tested. I am disappointed the vet did not give you even a possible diagnosis. So he was just throwing spaghetti at the wall, to see what would stick? Geez! Feel free to call & ask him about this ongoing or recurring problem. I don’t think he can charge you for asking for his opinion, or clarity on what he considers a likely diagnosis.

Do consider a refill on the spray, if it helped. You did not mention the shampoo, or whether it helped. I really doubt you’ve run out, so you might want to continue to use it, unless it makes her worse.

My suggestion is to add fatty fish (high in omega 3s) to her diet. Add at least 1 fish oil capsule per day, but buy it from a reputable drug/vitamin store like GNC. Skip Walmart. What I’d rather you do, is to buy some cans of mackerel from a store with the best prices (it varies per community whether a small store or super-store works best.) Add 1/4 of a can per day (including the soft bones) keep left-overs refridgerated. Fish can help decrease inflammation & histamine reactions to allergies. It can also help prevent her from having dry or flaky coat, which they are prone to. Use a coat conditionar after any shampooing. Put a plain cotton sheet over her current bed, to cover it. It’s unlikely to cause a reaction, unlike many other fibers.
