Advice on ways to use E-collars?

Hi, I have been using an e-collar on my dog with the help of my trainer ( but training is over now). I really like the way you can train with them, its easy to give a quick and effective correction. But it seems like some days he doesn’t even listen to it, and when we are around dogs its hard to get him to listen and concentrate. I was wondering if any one has any ways that they train with e-collars, any suggestions that are meaningful/helpful would be very much appreciated. If there are any rude comments you will get thumbs down.

The e-collar I am using is not a brand name one, I hope to get a Tri-tronics or Sit means sit collar.
The other name for E-collars are “shock collars” or electric collars.

I would recommend the Dogtra 200gold. It is a very comfortable collar both in fit and in feel. The remote is easy to use and you can quickly ramp up if necessary. If your dog is not obeying your commands there may be a reason why. First, your timing may be off which can confuse your dog. Secondly, you may have the setting too low and he is choosing to ignore it. Most people I know who are not getting good results are using the remote as little as possible, thinking that if the dog does the command, then he is getting really obedient and you can use the remote less. This is confusing…in the beginning of e training you must use the setting that works for your dog and be on that button for EVERY command every time. When I am inside my house I used to use a setting of 20 which is barely felt by me or dog. But as there are few distractions, you may not need to go higher. Outside on a walk we have it set at 40. That is pretty much where my dog needs it to be. Just enough to get his attention, not enough to hurt him. When we are doing field work and swimming I need to ramp up to 60…again, his excitement level goes up and he needs a stronger touch to get him to focus on whatever command I give him.
My trainer had a package of 5 private lessons and then group class for the life of the dog. I am sorry to hear training is over for you…the most important part of training is the constant reinforcement of the dog and the constant practice for you.
The brand of collar you use does make a difference. I used an Innotek once when my Dogtra was being serviced…it was horrible.
I know what you mean about the rude comments…there are certainly those people out there who are very against any e training. And it may not be for every dog, but it was the right choice for me. I have been doing it for a year with great results and I have a very happy, obedient dog.
