How can I grow my hair out (as a man)?

Near my early teens I tried to do this, and it ended up just looking messy, even though I stuck with it for a while. Eventually I went back to a shorter haircut, which was easier and cleaner. What was I missing? What should I tell the hair cutters that I’m going for when I go to get my hair cut? I’ve never known what to tell hair cutters really, although it’s easier at a barber shop.

I’m also worried that it will look strange with a full beard (in addition to how long hair and a full beard normally look strange to people >_<). I don't want to look like I'm lazy, even though I actually am. I don't think I'm willing to give up the beard, but I could trim it shorter than I have been doing.

Also, if there's anything I should know about caring for longer hair, please tell me.

1. get your hair trimmed every 6-8 weeks
2. use good shampoo and conditioner (from a salon, tresemme is also really good)
3. when using heat styling products ALWAYS use a heat protector
(tresemme makes a really good one)
4. take hair, skin, and nail vitamins ($5 at walmart)
5. if your hair is dry use a deep conditioner once a week
6. dont wash your hair every day it strips the natural oils (3-4 times a week)
