Can I train my 2yr old Yorkie to like his “pocketbook” carrier?

I’m going to be flying home in Dec. and want to take my 4lb. Yorkie with me. I need to get him used to his carrier. It’s a pocketbook style, goes over my shoulder. I want him to like it so that I can start to take him out and around town with me. Any suggestions how to train him? He’s 2 yrs old and I dont believe his previous owners ever toted him around in anything…thanks. Appreciate any help.

I tried to do this with my first dog and he really hated it and also I felt weird carrying him around…but that’s besides the point

Try some positive association. Put him in the bag for short periods of time and treat…just for like a minute or two,then repeat and increase the time. Start out just around the house. Spend 15min or so everyday treating him when he cooperates inside the bag,but do lots of repetition….also take him on a nice 30min-45min walk before you start…exercising him before will tire him out and his energy will be focused on the task not other things. Before I start any obedience its always after the walk…Im not sure why he doesn’t like it but sometimes its just not that comfortable and you might need to take that into consideration…I know my dogs are fine in a soft carry handheld bags (with the zip-up entry) but not the purse style totes were they have to be placed inside.

Also I would treat tiny pieces of real chicken.Real food always works better especially for dogs that may need that extra incentive.
