Puppy Potty Training

Puppy House Training is one of the most important things a new dog owner needs to teach their puppy. When a dog is properly potty trained an owner’s life will be made much easier. Dogs will be less likely to urinate inside and more likely to perform their business outside quickly and without resistance.

Potty training a puppy is relatively easy, and doesn’t have to be hard or take a long time to do. It just takes perseverance and repetition.

First you need to get some newspapers or pretreated puppy potty training pads. The puppy potty training pads are treated with a special chemical that will attract the puppy to it, thus encouraging the puppy to potty on the pads. When you see the puppy starting to walk around and sniff the floor, and even lifting their legs, quickly pick them up and bring them over to the puppy potty training pads. Praise your puppy once he urinates on the potty training pads.

AS you repeat the training process with your puppy he will learn to associate going potty with the puppy potty training pads, and will begin to use them on his own. When he is using the training pads consistently start moving the papers closer to the door, and you can also place some training pads outside as well. After awhile remove the training pads from the inside and your puppy will be performing his duties outside. Eventually you can remove the training pads outside.

Do not punish your puppy for urinating inside unless you catch him in the act. If it has been longer than 30 seconds since the puppy last went potty inside they will not recognize what the punishment is for and will begin to fear you. If you are going to punish the puppy it must be while he is urinating, instead of punishment try focusing on positive reinforcement to prevent future acts.

You can use the command ‘Outside’ to associate with your puppy’s potty training. Start by saying outside when you notice the puppy is getting ready to use the bathroom, then immediately take him outside. Now tell him either to go potty or some other command that is related then once he performs his business bring him inside. You need to associate that outside is for potty only. Only use the word outside when you want him to go potty, you do not want the dog to associate it with playing outside or going on a walk, this will only hinder training.

Puppy potty training is an important part of introducing a new puppy to your home, to prevent messes, bad cleanups which we all don’t like to do, and is just as integral to training your puppy like teaching him to come and sit.
