Anyone have good tips for Leash Training a puppy?

I’d like to leash train my puppy so she can exercise and release all some pent up energy from being home while I’m gone. So far all she does is sit down when I try to go for a walk. I’ve left her harness on her and she’s gotten used to the feel, but that’s all so far. I’ve tried telling her “come” (she doesn’t know the come command completely) and I’ve tried luring her with toys, but she doesn’t budge.

Try treats first.. use a really meaty treat (like pupporoni) to try and lure her to you. If she doesn’t come at first, move towards her, let her smell the treat.. than slowly move backwards. Say “Come” as she comes.. this way your killing 2 birds with one stone (leash training, and teaching “come”).

If she’s not interested in the treat.. its time to play the wait game! Yay! Every new puppy-owners favorite game.

when she plops down, keep walking until the leash is stretched all the way, but not actually pulling. Than kneel down and simply wait. Try calling her, make kissy noises, but if she doesnt come.. just wait.

Eventually, she’ll break and come to you.. how fun is it just sitting there anyway? She doesn’t WANT to just sit there.. she’s just scared. Give her time to adjust to her surroundings, get a feel for the sights and sounds, and she’ll come around.

Try tieing her up and going out to the yard by YOURSELF and do some yard work or something.. make her watch you. Eventually, curiousity will get to her and she’ll want to come over to you.

The only things you DON’T want to do is force her. No dragging her, no picking her up and walking to another point in the lawn, no yelling or pushing.. just stay calm and let her figure it out for herself.

She’ll come around

I adopted a 10wk old great dane puppy 2 weeks ago.. she was very skittish at first and didn’t want to venture down my porch steps. So I let her sit up there, and raked the leaves one day.. well, turns out she has a “thing” for leaves and once she realized everything was safe.. she came down the steps and plopped right into a big pile of leaves (destroying all my work — but it was worth it). She was still a little gaurded a while after that, but it wasn’t nearly as hard to get her off the steps as it was before.

Now, 2 weeks later.. she tells ME when she wants to go outside and go on walks lol. She runs down the steps, completely ignores me yelling “Emma, Come” and just sits by the front door. I’m still waiting on her to learn to whine (instead of just ignore me) when she has to “go”, but this works for now.
