I want to join the French Foreign Legion:What sort of training will best prepare me for the basic training?

I was thinking of training for a year before I go to France and apply.But I have no military experience.

Not everyone who joins the legion has previous military experience, but as with any type of military the individual needs to be ready for a short ,sharp, shock both mentally and physically.

The decision to join the army is not one that should be taken lightly. Soldiering is not like any other career; it can be physically and mentally draining, dangerous – after all, the army’s main purpose is combat – and it’s not easy to leave if you decide that it’s not for you.

Personally if you want some sort of training to prepare yourself for the long journey ahead you might consider joining the TA (if you can) this way you would get the training without the full commitment of being in the regular army, and you should definitley learn some basic french, as Selection is carried out in Aubagne near Marseille, being able to talk their language will show them your commitment and that you have put some effort in and not just rolled up at the door.

Even if many Foreign Legion candidates have previous military experience, this is not an essential requirement. The basic training teaches all legionnaires enough military know-how to be able to serve with “honour and fidelity”. Previous knowledge of the French language is not required either. French is taught to legionnaires during basic training.

If you have a year until you go, use the time wisely and you’ll piss anything they throw at you.
