Trainer Obedience Field

I’m meeting with my trainer tomorrow to talk about pursuing a career with dogs. What to ask?

I’m meeting with the lady who has taught all the obedience classes I have taken my dog to. I’ve learned a lot from her and have loved dogs my entire life. I’ve been struggling to find something I’m passionate about to pursue a career in and dogs seems like the obvious choice. I’m not sure if I want to be a trainer or what, but I emailed her asking if she could meet with me and give me some advice to point me in the right direction.

I’ve made a little list of things to ask her about like what kind of certifications I would need and where to get them, if she knows of any volunteer or apprenticeship opportunities and if she has any general advice on her career field. What else should I be asking about? I don’t want to walk in there unprepared and just waste her time since she’s going out of her way for me. Any ideas would be awesome. I’ve never done anything like this before and I’m not sure exactly what to cover.

Its not going to be a waste of time. Its how i came to be doing what I do now!! I work with abandoned, surrendered and abused animals, and am an independently contract rescue worker and I train service dogs! Usually your local shelter or rescue center will be glad to let you volunteer just to try your hand at working with animals. Ask her how much time you would need once you decide on what you want to do. Whether its train or just donate your time to become a volunteer. What kinds of dogs are you willing to work with? that will make a HUGE difference. If you decide to be a trainer, do some research and get to know certain dogs temperaments and how they should be trained. if you just want to volunteer and work with strays abused or surrendered animals, are you willing to give it your all to work with this dog and see it go to a good home?

I think its an excellent career choice. Just know that whatever you decide to do with animals, YOU will be influencing their life and shaping them to become the best animals they can be. Don’t worry, you won’t be wasting her time. She will probably be more than happy to give you some pointers and point you in the right direction!
