Dog Insurance and Responsible Breeding?

Given that irresponsible breeding potentially causes health problems in dogs of all breeds it seems to me that those of us who research before we buy and pay top price for a good Quality Dog are subsidising the owners who purchase from Puppy Mills and Back Yard Breeders.

Should the pet health insurance companies take into account the background and experience of the breeder and the pedigree of the dog when deciding individual premiums?

Would this be one way of encouraging people to steer clear of Puppy Mills, pet shops and BYBs or would such a system simply be unmanageable?

Nice idea but probably not practical. I don’t believe any insurance company would have the knowledge to assess a pedigree for health or even a good breeder. A novice with an excellent mentor may well produce a better litter than someone with 50 yrs experience who knows how to sweep things under the carpet!
A good starting point would be cheaper premiums for puppies whose parents have had the relevent health checks – for example in Labradors, if the parents have good hip scores there’s less chance of the pups having HD.
Personally, I think insurance is a big rip-off anyway and prefer to keep my own money in my own Emergency Fund!!
Edit: How depressing to read a Vet‘s view that puppy mill or responsible breeder make no difference.
How totally untrue and misleading.
Is he saying that there is no point in testing for HD, ED, HC etc? If so, perhaps the BVA will have to stop taking money off us responsible breeders as there is no point in testing to improve our breeds.

Accessibility is defined as a firm’s ease of entering or supplying from or to a market (the “supply side”), and latent demand is an indicator of the potential in serving from or to the market (the “demand side”). Framework for Prioritizing Countries. Demand/Market Potential Driven Firm. Relative Accessibility. Accessibility/Supply Averse Firm. In the top figure, the firm is driven by market potential, whereas the bottom figure represents a firm that is driven by costs or by an aversion to difficult markets. This report treats the reader as coming from a “generic firm” approaching the global market – neither a market-driven nor a cost-driven company. Planners must therefore augment this report with their own company-specific factors that might change the priorities (e.g. a Canadian firm may have higher accessibility in Canada than a German firm).
