Painting Acrylic on hardboard? PLEASE HELP!?

I’m so stressed out!!! I’m doing a commission for a friend as we speak – large acrylic mural on hardboard. I’ve never used HB before,- only canvas….but the hardboard has been properly primed etc. But whenever I try to paint, the paint just either runs off, goes streaky with the brush (like, little white lines through the paint) or dries REALLY pale at best.

HELP PLEASE! What can I do to make this work? They say a craftsman never blames his tools, but in this case…….

Don’t dilute the paint with water. Put a couple of coats of a backing colour straight out of the tube on the hardboard (cobalt/dark blue or opaque yellow works depending on the subject matter) and then paint over that when its dry. Bear in mind some acrylic colours are transparent and whatever the surface you’ll get streaks if you aren’t careful or you don’t use student /artist grade paint.
