Long Tail Keywords – Easy Way to Grab Customers for Your Business

The principle of the Long Tail is the opposite of focusing on the top 10-20 keywords. Webmasters who solely focus on the top 10-20 terms may be missing the majority of their market traffic. In addition to the main keywords for a site, there may be thousands of other key phrases that a website is found for, yet rarely noticed or exploited by owners of the website. Smart marketers are quick to capitalize on this oversight by others.

Just consider this scenario – the top 10 terms you are targeting might provide a lot of traffic, but not nearly as much as the total terms after the top 10 or 20 most popular keyphrases. Just add up the traffic from all the search terms which refer 1-3 visitors or more per month to your site. The total may be much higher than the traffic from your best 10 keywords.

Benefits of Targeting Long Tail
Long-tail keyword are usually 3-8 words in length, with less traffic potential. However, the benefit is that it is generally easier to get ranked for these keywords as competition is not high. Another major benefit is that long-tail keyword phrases often make excellent article topics.

Let us consider a real life example. www.NarutoWallpaper.biz is a website about wallpapers. This site receives more than 1000 visitors per day. 50% of the traffic comes from the major 2-3 keywords. But the remaining traffic comes from nearly 198 different keywords.

If you are wondering why should we target hundreds of such keywords which only bring tiny amount of traffic, here is the easy answer. These long tail keywords might not bring a lot of traffic separately, but if you target lots of long tail keywords you can get lots of easy traffic. This is easy traffic because most of the times, there isn’t high competition for these keywords. So they are easy pickings. That is why sometimes, long tail keywords are also known as ‘low hanging fruits’.

Let us look at another big benefit – conversions. It is reported that these long tail keyword visitors convert amazingly well into sales and ad clicks. They are highly targeted visitors who already know what they are looking for and if you can provide that in your article, you can get some easy conversions.

Why Target Long Tail First?
If you focus mainly on generic keywords then the rankings will take longer time. In the meanwhile you lose out on a lot of targeted traffic. On the contrary, if the long tail keywords are targeted first, then in due course, the website may start ranking for the main keyphrases as well, thus registering an increase in targeted traffic as time passes.
