Tiny Dog Collar
Aggressive dog at times prong collar, choke or halti?
My dog is a mastiff Pit Bull mix 15 months old, usually a sweetheart. He goes to doggie day care and plays with 30 dogs twice a week without problem. He plays with dogs in the backyard of my building and usually is submissive. However sometimes if he is in the elevator, or in the lobby on leashe and he sees a dog especially tiny ones he will literally try to kill them. Hell jump up and go nuts even though he knows them and has played with them. This usually happens with dogs that start with him and bark at him. First off if he gets loose he will kill the other dog. I have a thin choker now and it doesnt do much and im afraid it will snap. What kind of collar should i use. Also any suggestiion to change his behavior?
Is the problem the leash? Some dogs can become fearful if they are on leash and feel restricted from protecting themselves.
You need to call up a number of trainers and explain your situation in as much detail as you can. Does it also occur in the lobby of the doggy day care? What about when he is walking on leash down the street or at the park?
Why do you think he will kill the other dog? Is there barking, snarling, growling, ears back, hackles up?
While you look for a trainer to help you understand the problem, you need to get a sturdy leather or nylon collar and a strong leash. If you are really worried, you can get a basket muzzle.
The problem with a choke or prong collar is that you do not really understand the situation and may make it worse using one of those. Until you understand what is going on, you need to keep him from causing any damage by escaping from you. Tie the leash around your waist if you have to or use a double leash (one around your waist, another in your hand). Avoid the elevator and give a wide berth to yappy little dogs.
If he is a highly sensitive dog, a squirt of binaca on his tongue or in a cloud in front of his face (not in but in front) can bring him to his senses. Some people use a can of compressed air and others use hairspray (which is glue and isn’t recommended). Dogs don’t like the hiss of air so you might give this a try in the meantime just in case you meet up with the yappy ones.
