Laws regarding found animals?

Say an animal (let’s stick with dogs and cats for ease of the question) wanders onto your property. The animal has no identification – tags, micro-chip, etc. – and you’ve not seen an ad for a lost pet. Is there a law that gives you direction on steps you have to take before you can claim the animal as your own? For example, do you have to put up fliers and leave them up x-amount of days, contact your local shelter and give a description, in case someone calls looking for it, run an ad in the local paper for x amount of days?

Also, say you get this animal medical treatment – if the owner comes to claim it, could you request that they reimburse you for the animal’s Vet bills and/or food you purchased for the animal, or would that be considered doing someone of your own free will (and just a nice act for the animal, too)?

If there is no law, what is the general thing to do when finding what could be a stray or lost pet?

Laws concerning animals vary from location to location and in some States animals are considered property.

In general an unidentified animal will be difficult to find an owner and what you do is your decision.
My first thought would be to call animal shelters etc and leave info on animal, posters are good too.

Sadly especially in these financially hard times more and more animals are being abandoned.
Your only responsibility and course of action is your morality and what you think is right.

On the found animal and medical bills, that should be the responsibility of the irresponsible owner(who lost his pet.)
Indeed we are supposed to be smarter than our pets, not altogether the case!
