How much to raise a large dog?

Okay, I am thinking of investing in a large dog (Rottweiler) as a stud dog. So is it wiser to buy a young pup, and train until it is old enough to breed (and how old is that)? Or should I buy a older dog that is already trained? And what can I make off of a stud dog?

I doubt that you will make much money from your investment. To start with to end up with a dog which would be desirable as a stud dog you will need to purchase a puppy from high quality parents who have gained their Championship titles, and preferably with Champions behind them as well. This will be expensive. The cost of raising a dog is not to be underestimated – food, bedding, toys, veterinary expenses. In addition you will need to show your dog to gain its championship title – another expense – show fees, travel, grooming equipment, etc. Once it has gained its championship title you will need to undergo all the relevant health and genetic tests applicable to your breed – more expense. Of course, after doing all this you may discover that your dog does not have sufficient quality to make it a good breeding specimen.

Without doing all this you will not find many breeders willing to use your dog over their bit*ches. Also, the quality of your stud dog determines the fee you are able to ask.
