Yugioh question!!!! If there is no monster on your opponents side of the field and you attack…?

My brother and I were dueling, and he had no monsters on the field, so I attacked his lifepoints directly with my Monster LittleWinguard. But he activates the trap card Physical Double and creates a mirage token on his side of the field based on my Ancient GearKnight monster. He claims that since I attacked and he countered with the trap card, my LittleWinguard whose attack is 1400 was forced to attack his 1800 attack mirage token. He was adamant that he was right so I just accepted because he’s so stubborn. So basically my question is: If there is no monsters on the opponents side of the field and you attack him directly, but he used PhysicalDouble to create a mirage token, is your monster forced to attack the token?

What you encountered in your duel is called a “Replay”. What that means is that if you attack and anything on your opponents field changes due to an effect, then a replay occurs and you have the option to change your decision to attack. I’m not sure if I’m saying this right. So basically you were right and your brother was wrong. When he activated Physical Double and created that token, he changed the number of monsters on the field which created the Replay. In that case, the turn player who attacked has the option to change his attack target or choose not to attack at all. You are not forced to attack if you choose not to. I hope that made any sense.
