How can i get my horse to run and give the barrels her all?

I have a 6 year old mare. she’s been runnin barrels for 3 years. Im the only person whose ever ran her. She’s the smartest horse iv ever met and she figures me out. She was trained for 2 weeks before the trainer said i can’t teach her anymore. She has perfect barrels but she won’t buckle down. She runs but barely. She doesn’t really try and she gets so stubborn as the day goes on at a local race that she trys spinnin around and bunny hoppin away from the gate. Not in an excited way but in a i don’t wanna work way. Iv tried opening her up in fields and she has it but i did that last year and that helped and got her times up but she’s still 3D/4D open at local shows. How do i get her to like barrels and actually try?

This is a tough question. You have to make her think it is her idea, and you have to make her want to run the barrels. Easier said than done! Every horse that I have ever had that was really good at barrels wanted to do it. The one horse that I bought because she was super fast hated running the pattern and balked every time I tried to train with her. She never did very well because her heart wasn’t in it. The horse that my then husband bought to rope from loved running barrels and did quite well at it. I wish I could give you a magic formula, but the horse has to want to do it, she has to live to do it. If she has a favorite treat, withhold it until she has ran as you want her to. You could try that. Positive reinforcement could help.
