How to train my stubborn dog??

How can I train my 1/2 border collie 1/2 healer? She is about 1 or 2 and very stubborn. She i very bullheaded. And she jumps all over me and my family and it hurts. The only thing she knows is sit. NO STUPID AWNSERS PLEASE!

She is very aggressive to other people and dogs. She is just trying to protect me. NOT tring to kill them or anything like that.

First of all, your dog is not stubborn. Dogs simply do what works for them. Your dog is repeating a behavior that gets her something, probably your attention. It doesn’t have to be happy attention, it can be as much as your eye contact and your hands on her pushing her down. This is why yelling “No!” or other verbal reprimands aren’t going to be effective. It will simply show her that she can get your attention by jumping on you.

Jumping is a normal behavior for dogs and normal behaviors do not disappear, they must be replaced with another behavior. In this case, you are going to replace it with something she already knows, Sit.

Put your dog on a leash and ask her to sit. Now step on the leash at a point where it still leaves enough room for her to be comfortable, but not enough that she can get the height to jump on someone. Ask one of your family members to approach. If she tries to jump, have the family member stop and turn their back. When she sits, praise her and give her a treat reward. Repeat these steps until she remains seated when someone approaches, then they can praise her and give her the attention she is seeking with jumping.

Because she has a history of being reinforced for the jumping, this isn’t going to stop after 1-2 tries. You and your family will need to be very consistent with YOUR behavior in order to change hers.

The biggest mistake dog owners make is that they try something a couple of times, then they try something else, then another thing and pretty soon they have become a slot machine, randomly reinforcing the dog for its behavior.

And the next time you think she is stubborn and bullheaded, ask yourself why you have continued to react the same way to her behavior when it isn’t working….often, we humans are MUCH more stubborn than the dogs.
