Stubborn Big Dog

Do you need to be fit to own a high energy dog?

I’ve been planning to own a dog in a few years once I move out of my parents home(which will be quite a few years), and I really love big dogs. However, I don’t have very good cardiovascular endurance(a.k.a stamina). The best thing to do would naturally be to get a smaller, low energy dog; but even though I think all dogs are cute, I am not a fan of small dogs. It may seem stubborn, but I really want a breed that I like.

So, even if I’m not necessarily the athlete, would it be possible to own a high energy dog such as Siberian Huskies, German Shepherds, etc.? Is there a way to exercise such a dog without running out of breath yourself? A well-thought out, serious answer is much appreciated.
Just for the information, there’s a certain breed I’m interested in, a “Shiloh Shepherd”.

No….you don’t necessarily have to be an “athlete” to own & exercise an active breed.

For instance, if you owned a German Shepherd or Lab, or some type of dog that would play “fetch” for hours….you can quite literally stand in one place and let your dog play fetch until he drops. They make all sorts of ball “launchers” and hand-held “scoops” that help you get some good distance when you throw the ball.

Playtime at the dog park is a good outlet for some dogs….not all dogs are social with other dogs but IF your dog enjoys it, it can be the perfect way for him to get exercise.

Dogs can also be taught to walk on treadmills. Dog show folks often use treadmills to help a dog get into condition for show season. You can use a “human” motorized treadmill- but a lot of dogs have an easier time getting used to a “carpet” mill. It has no motor; is controlled by the dog- it stops when he stops. With a treadmill it’s important to gradually work the dog up to longer distances- never “force” him past his limits & always supervise him when he is using it. But used properly, a treadmill can be a dream come true for active dog owners….

Also, keep in mind that not all dogs of a certain breed are “alike”…..If you go through Rescue, you can likely find an adult Shepherd or Malamute who has a calm, more easygoing temperament. You’ll always find “exceptions to the rule” in any breed. That way you could enjoy having the breed you love without having the constant energy demands.
