Spot Size

I noticed a wet spot, the size of a grapefruit, on my carpeted basement floor what could it be?

The water heater (gas) is in a closet about two feet away from the wet spot. It doesnt appear that the water heater is leaking (there is no wetness around or leading to the wet spot) but can’t rule out that it is the water heater. The water heater is about 11 years old. There is also a bathroom that is two feet away but there is no sign of leakage. Our basement has never leaked and we have not had a lot of rain.
It ended up being the water heater.

Would there happen to be a drain inlet under the carpet at location of the water spot? It could be the carpet is picking up water from a drain that is nearly ready to overflow.
