Why does the moon sometimes appear to be quite large?
Sometimes when it’s low down in the sky it appears huge, I know it’s to do with the earths atmosphere etc, but can you please explain exactly why that is?
Also why does it sometimes appear red, as in a ‘harvest moon’ and it’s not an eclipse?
The moon appears larger when it’s close to the horizon because you have something to compare it to. When it’s high up in the sky, it’s the same size, but there’s a whole lotta nothing around it.
You’re right about the reason for why the the moon looks reddish orange when it’s close to the horizon- it is because it goes through more atmosphere. Remember that white light is made up of all the colors, and the more atmosphere the light goes through, the more colors get filered out. Here are the colors from lowest frequency to highest:
Red
Orange
Yellow
Green
Blue
Indigo
Violet
The atmosphere filters from the higher frequency down. By how much depends on how much atmosphere. In this case, it blocks out just enough to make it look orange.
Also, the same goes for if there’s dust in the air… more stuff to go through, less frequencies get through.
