What’s the best way to maintain a 2 yr. old dog at home while you are at work?

I’m getting a 2 yr. old Small Dog that is crate trained and house broken. I’ll be at work about 10 hrs. a day 5 days a week. I have a cat (not use to dogs) that has the run of the house. What’s the best way to maintain the dog while at work?

If everyone that worked could not have a dog then there would be even more euthanized a year than the thousands that are currently killed. Your getting an adult not a puppy so he/she may be able to go all day without ‘going,’ but it would be harsh to crate it for the entire time. Try to work out a system where the dog has toys and treats and try to make the best of your situation depending upon varying factors like – Do you live in house or apartment – can the dog have access to a yard via doggy door? Is it possible to use a room like other responder suggested – like his cellar – just for dog to stay in while your at work? Can you at least separate dog and cat? Get a large exercise pen at petstore and put the dog in that while you are gone – at least it would have room to walk about a bit.
Take the dog for long walk before and after work and prepare yourself for a few accidents and spend quality time with it while you are home.
