GROOMERS: I have a question about clipper blades, please answer?

When I go to use my clippers and my 3 blade, it doesn’t want to go through my dogs coat.

I DID fully comb my dog out, she had no snarls or thick undercoat.

But my blade did not go through.

Does my blade need sharpened?

I have used my blade like 13-15 times, and now I am having such trouble with it.

My mom gave me a 3 skip tooth blade, will it take a lot longer to shave my dog down with the skip tooth blade?

Skip tooth blades are TYPICALLY used for skimming work, not shaving work that would be close to the dog’s skin OR anywhere near the danger zones. That’s because skin folds can fit between the teeth of the blade, making it that much easier to clip skin (especially around the danger zones).

And what do you mean by “it won’t go through” the coat? There can be plenty of meanings behind that and many reasons. I’ve had blades (and attachments) not take off coat because that coat was already too short for the blade (IE there was no length for the blade to cut.) I’ve also had blades not work because they where dull (though usually a dull blade will leave “stripes” in the coat.)

It would be very odd for a blade to need sharpening after only 15 uses – my ten and thirty blades where used daily for going on eight weeks with no problem before needing sharpened. Have these blades been properly cleaned? Are they on the clippers properly? Try swapping to another blade – one that would leave the coat longer than your desired length – and see if that works on the coat. If it does, then maybe the #3 DOES need sharpened.

Another option would be visiting a professional groomer and asking THEM. See if THEIR #3 blades work on your dog or if they think yours could use sharpened.
