In a science fiction movie, when a spaceship explodes the vibrations from the shock wave destroy a nearby spaceship. if you were the science consultant for the movie what would your advice be for the producer?
As the other answers correctly point out, space is a vacuum. Shockwaves – and sound – need a medium to propagate through – like water or air. So there is no way for sound or shockwaves to spread in space. (Remember the tag line for the original Alien movie – “In space, no one can hear you scream.”)
That said, there are reasons why the explosion of one space ship might damage or blow up a nearby space ship – particularly debris from the first ship smashing into the second, but also perhaps radiant energy of some kind doing sufficient damage.
However, science fiction movies routinely ignore physics. Consider Star Wars – not only do the TIE fighers roar as they fly around, but all the fighters move in ways that you could never move in space, that mimic the way fighter aircraft move in atmosphere. And you hear explosions. And see energy beams moving through space. And the space ships can fly faster than light, etc., etc.
Movies do this for a few reasons. If you showed space craft flying accurately – the way they would have to in the real world – it would be a bit boring and would also look unreal to audiences, who are used to seeing unreal flying space craft, and planes in atmosphere. It would make it harder to tell the stories they want to tell if space ships couldn’t fly faster than light. Battles would look boring if you couldn’t hear the explosions and see the energy weapons. It’s more fun the way they do it.
So I think it is a judgment call what you do in a given movie – if you want to go with realism or space opera.
