Your opinion on a dog shock collar for a aggressive Pit Bull?

Behavior training didn’t work. What about a shock collar?

First, ignore all the ignorant responses about euthanasia and backyard breeders… seriously people, who made you all-knowing? You don’t know where the dog came from nor why it’s having aggression problems!

Second, the use of an electronic collar is a deterrent from certain behaviors. It will not “cure” aggression, but it can help teach the dog that aggressive behaviors will be corrected. You do need to be cautious when training an aggressive dog with any method. If the dog is animal-aggressive, for example, I would not suggest you give him access to an animal while counting on the collar to prevent him from attacking it. Electronic collars do not actually cause pain, just an unpleasant vibration (try one on your own hand or wrist, it’s an upsetting little zap, but not particularly painful). A truly enraged dog can easily ignore the vibration and continue doing whatever behavior you’re trying to correct. The collar is only a tool, not a cure-all.

I agree with another poster that the use of a Training Collar can also be helpful- I prefer a prong collar, which can be very useful for corrections anytime you have the dog on a leash. At the first sign of aggressive behavior, a quick tug on the leash will snap the dog out of it’s focus and give you a chance to correct the behavior.

Muzzles can be helpful and harmful, but if you’re worried about him biting in public, it may be a good idea to invest in a good basket or cage muzzle for public outings.

You might also want to look into a different trainer- perhaps see if you can find one who specializes in aggressive dogs or bully breeds? Every trainer is different, just because one failed doesn’t mean another might not succeed.
