Shock collar for Lab puppy to control barking….thoughts please.?

Our 5 month old Black Lab puppy has a serious barking problem. It’s to the point where he barks all day long and sometimes depending on the activity outside all night long too. He is not mean at all and does not bark aggressively just non stop. My husband has suggested we get him a shock collar that is suggested to be used for 2 weeks to help train the puppy to stop barking. It is not a powerful shock and is described by Drs Foster and Smith as a “static shock”. Will this help and have any of you used this type of Training Collar on a puppy? We need to do something as our neighbors sleep during the day and are starting to get angry.

Is the puppy living outdoors or sleeping outdoors at night? If so, this is the entire problem. Because dogs are pack-oriented, extremely social animals, they do not tolerate being tossed into the backyard alone. They bark, they dig, they develop neurotic behaviors like digging, licking/scratching themselves non-stop, they chew on the siding of the home, etc.

If the dog is being kept outdoors, the solution is simply to keep the dog indoors unless you are outside supervising the dog. You CAN train a dog not to bark. You can NOT train a dog not to bark when the dog is nowhere near you. 2 weeks is way too long to leave a bark collar on a dog-in that amount of time, the collar could cause skin damage (the collars are tightly fitted-a few hours in a collar is plenty).

Sorry to tell you this, but outside dogs are nuisances (as you’ve discovered) to their neighborhoods (and they lower property values, too). The only way to stop the barking is to spend more time with the dog, and train him not to bark. 2 weeks in a shock collar will not stop barking…these collars are training tools-they are not going to stop barking-as soon as the collar comes off, the barking will resume, and so will calls from angry neighbors to you and the police or animal control.
