Bark Collar (static) Not Working ?

My dog, whom I love, barks all night when I’m at work. I tried everything, even a hired trainer to stop him from barking (he’s a Shih Tzu). He also scratched alot, and in a small apartment that makes noise enough to equal the barking for the neighbors.

So now he’s in a cage at night, and has a shock collar (Yes I’ve worn it myself, I feel terrible using it but its a last resort). The problem is I come home to barking a lot. I’ve tried trimming the hair down to almost a shave around his neck, and tightening the collar, but short of strangling him it doesn’t seem to work.

The battery is fine, and I realize if there’s slippage it won’t work but does anyone have a different solution or a way to fix this I’m just to stupid to see? Thanks – Josh

The problem with shock collars is that sometimes the dog doesn’t understand that the shocking will stop if he stops barking. So he barks because it hurts. You can’t just put it on him and then leave him. You have to be there to calm him and help him realize that the shock stops when the bark stops. that said, there are other bark deterents other than shock. There are citronella collars which spray citronella in front of their nose when they bark, or there are ultrasonic sound units that you can place in the room with him. With either method, I’d use it when you’re present first.

The other thing is that you can’t expect instant success when trying to deter barking. You want the dog to think the crate is a good place to go, so make his experiences in there positive. I feed my dogs their meals in their crates and I always give them treats when i crate them. You can buy some great treat dispensing toys like a kong or treat ball, that you can fill and give to him when you put him in the crate. this will give him something to do when you’re gone. I’d make your separations short at first, with you sitting outside the door so you can monitor if he starts to bark.
