Is Ultimate Shear Strength the same as Ultimate Strength?
Using an appendix on material properties how do I find the ultimate tensile strength of cold-rolled stainless steel when I know:
Yield Strength
Ultimate Strength
Modulus of Elasticity
Modulus of Rigidity
and Poisson’s Ratio
Can you elaborate a little more….
My given Yield Strength is 165 ksi
Ultimate strength is 190 ksi
There is no relation whatever between ultimate shear strength and ultimate tensile strength for any material. The material failure mechanism in shear and in tension are usually different.
Mohr’s circle only resolves a given state of stress into different coordiate axes. It tells you nothing about the ultimate stress at failure.
Presumably you are talking about cold rolled sheet. I would take the “Ultimate Strength” as meaning ultimate tensile strength.
Ask yourself again how you were planning to use the ultimate shear strength value. It probably doesn’t make any sense to try to use rolled sheet in a situation where it would deform plastically in shear, let alone fail in shear.
You can find the YIELD strength in shear from Mohr’s circle, because (by definition of what “yield strengh” means) the material is still elastic and isotropic at that point.
