Paging all Knitting Experts!!!?

I have a pattern for a cute sweater – it’s mainly in “shaker stitch” or fisherman’s rib” — I am having more than a tough time with it and I was wondering if I can just knit the thing in stockinette stitch — and follow the pattern the same way as far as gauge and all that — just change the stitch. . .
Please help . . .I had some great answers on a previous question about how to do fisherman’s rib – but I don’t “get it” and I have so far pulled this thing apart 3 times.

You certainly can knit it just in stockinette, as long as the guage is the same you can knit it in whatever pattern you like.
Thats the wonderful thing about knitting, you can design it however you like and even adjust the pattern as you go!!!
If you have frogged it 3 times already, then I certainly would change to a stitch pattern you feel more comfortable with-this is supposed to be fun, and the frustration you feel right now isnt fun at all. Also, some yarns can get kinda pilled if you keep frogging.
As for the fishermans rib stitch, maybe youre thinking too much. This is usually the problem with me when I cant get a stitch down and this is a pretty easy stitch. If you can stand to hear one more explanation, I’ll see if I can help you out on it.
on the first row you purl across, every stitch is a purl stitch.
on every row after that you-
purl the first stitch unless told different in the pattern. Then you knit one stitch in the back loop. I have a feeling this is the area of frustration. Look at the stitch before you do anything.
you see where you would put your needle if you were knitting it. youre going to do the opposite. hold your needle like your going to purl that stitch but instead of sliding the needle forward under the front leg of the stitch, you are going to move your needle back away from you and knit the stitch behind it.(the same stitch you would have purled) Your going into the stitch like youre gonna purl but instead you knit the leg under the needle, its like knitting with your other hand. you do that stitch , then purl one, then knit one in the back loop again, those 2 stitches are all you need to do. if you want to see it move by move heres a good tutorial with loads of pics!!
