12 ga low brass 7 1/2′s and improved choke or semi-auto 25 acp for mountain lion emergency?
which and why? not just protecting myself, dogs and kids/novices too. out to 30-40 yds? thats how far the dogs work. quail hunting, thats why such a small 12 ga load.
i was wondering if carrying the pistol would be any help, or if i should just stick to the shotgun in my hands. i dont like using bigger loads for quail, and i wouldnt feel comfortable with trying to switch to an emergency load in my coat. i would look like barney fife digging in his pocket for his bullet. would you switch to that pistol? or take your chances with the 7 1/2′s at that distance and proximity to others?
good point milkman. slugs or buckshot would be hard to explain to a ranger when i was quail hunting, especially without a deer tag.
Forget that pistol unless you stick it in the cats ear and fire.
Go with the shotgun. I have yet to see a mountain lion stick around when peppered with bird shot and I have seen and ate my share of them. Plus if it does go ape and actually attack you save a round or two for when its just a few feet away and aim for the face. That will ruin its day!
At 12 feet that will do the cat in with a face shot.
