Is it safe for dogs to eat rubber chew toys?

I have a five-month-old Pit Bull, and she destroys toys like they’re nothing! We started with regular toys which she demolished within minutes. She has a Booda Bone we got her last week and is already coming apart. As I type, she’s biting very small chunks off a black Kong toy, which she’s only had for an hour! I don’t want to discourage her from chewing her toys because she’ll just chew my furniture instead – she’s teething. Nylabones last five minutes, so I can’t keep feeding her those. Are these little rubber pieces (about the size of fingernail clippings) safe for her to eat? Or does anyone know of an “indestructible” toy for this aggressive chewer?

I know that booda bones and nylabones are safe for them to eat…small pieces of rubber are not dangerous, but they are not desireable…rubber is a derivative from a tree, and is not toxic to her, but it becomes a problem when the pieces are large. They do not break down in the digestive tract, and can get lodged in her body…they can cause impaction (intestinal and renal blockage). Look for something much larger than her mouth (my cousin buys over sized tennis balls [about the size of a soccer ball] for her rottie mix, and those work well because he cannot get good enough hold of it to tear pieces off and eat them.)

I would recommend a kong toy, but you have already stated that she is shredding one as we speak, so I really would recommend lots and lots of nylabones and booda bones…they are mainly cornstarch which will break down in the digestive tract, and wont cause blockage. I know that greenies makes a very large chew toy that is supposed to be very very tough…I saw them for sale at petco…they were very heavy, and seemed very substantial, but they were also rubber, and would provide the same risk if consumed, so I really would recommend sticking to cornstarch chew toys or try adding raw hide chew toys (avoid pig’s ears, as they can carry a flu like virus that can be passed to people, and possibly dogs; and raw hide “sticks” as they can splinter, and damage sensitive mouth tissue). Try twisted raw hide, or maybe even a training buoy made for water retrieving breeds.
