Rope Chew

My pupy continues to chew on anything with my scent. How can I stop this?

I havve purchased Puppy Chew toys, bones, ropes, anything the local stores can provide, but it seems my little guy is more interested in anything with my scent on it. I have lost several socks, underwear and two pairs of shoes to this.

There are a few chew toys that he might prefer based on his preferences of socks, underwear, and shoes, but as you have already figured out, it’s mainly based on your scent.

While the other answer is correct in that the dog will respond to a firm hand, you should ask yourself if that’s really the type of dog you want to raise (the one you have to beat to modify behavior).

There are a few good things you can do to help stop this – and feel free to do ALL of the following.

1) Reward him for chewing on his toys: if he gets the chance and chooses to chew on something that belongs to him, reward him like crazy with something he likes (some dogs like treats, others prefer cuddles, it’s up to you to find out what your dog likes best – though hot dogs fried in butter I don’t think have ever been turned down (TINY PIECES!!)).

2) Make your stuff less appealing and/or less available. He can’t chew what he can’t get to, so make sure you pick up after your self. If your socks, underwear, and shoes aren’t lying around where he can get at them, he can’t chew them. If you have no choice but to leave them where he can get them (I really don’t see how that’s possible, but for the sake of argument I’ll make the assumption): then treat them with a repellent spray like Bitter Apple or Bitter Yuck (I prefer Bitter Yuck because it doesn’t have alcohol in it). If you use a bitter spray, you have to let the dog chew it once so he can see that it’s yucky.

3) Redirect the behavior whenever you can. If you catch your dog chewing on your shoe, bring the dog to his toys and reward him if he chews on one. DO NOT bring the toy to him or your dog has just taught you to fetch for him.

4) Train the commands “leave it” and “drop it.”

Once he has a firm grasp of both commands you can start practicing with objects around the house that you don’t want him to get.
