How can I make a dog fetch the leash (the retractable type[plastic handle & leash retacts into handle])?

I ‘babysit’ my brothers dog a lot and would like to teach the dog to fetch the leash if it wants to go for a walk.
I think it knows what leash means and it certainly knows what walk means.
I i say “Do you want to go for a walk” it gets very excited and certainly wants to go for a walk.
It will wait for me very early in the morning and seems to bug me about going for a walk.

Let the dog see you put a treat on the leash as you say “go get the leash”. Do this each time you walk him. After a few days, start putting the treat on the leash without letting him see you do it, then say “go get the leash”. He will begin to associate the leash with treats and walks. Soon you will be able to say “go get the leash” without placing a treat on the leash, but you should still reward him in some way when he brings it to you. Good luck!
