Remote Obedience

I just took puppy on her first walk….did not go well, HELP!?
I took my female collie/shep mix puppy out around the block today for the first time. I think I waited too long because she is VERY fearful of the world. As soon as she heard other dogs barking she bolted to the end of the leash in fear to try and get away. She also does these short little woof, woofs! Now I’m very concerned. She is a submissive dog. I had to wait until she has ALL of her shots, because I live in a remote community that has an issue with roaming stray dogs, and the Parvo virus affects alot of them, I didnt want to take any chances.
Is this still fixable?? I know there is a period in a puppys life where socialization is critical, and unfortunatley she missed out. There are no obedience classes here and I dont know any stable dogs to bring her around.
Basically I just want to know some tips, how should I react when shes fearful? What should I do? Today when she showed fear and wanted to bolt, I just started running and moving forward, ignoring her protests.
I wonder what a “leach” look like? And some of your “expert advisers” have told you to do the exact wrong things.
Without knowing Pup’s age and how long you have had her and what her reaction to various things is at home, I can’t give any specific advice.
But sien life/developmental stages are:
• 7-9 weeks old: Bring pup home. Stay with it for at least a week, learning its timing & signals for various things, and convincing it that the world is a fun safe place and that you are the source of everything good in the universe. Familiarise Pup with every movement, reflection, scent, sight, sound & texture on your property. Keep pup in ‘home quarantine’ until 2 weeks after:
• First set of vaccinations, normally given at 8 weeks old.
• 10+ weeks: Start taking Pup to places where dogs do NOT run loose, do NOT piddle-poo-vomit. There encourage pup to try to “explore in all directions at once” at the end of a 2m/6ft lead – except when you need to haul her away from timid people or dangerous/disgusting things. Familiarise Pup with every movement, reflection, scent, sight, sound & texture in the area – always starting from a distance that SHE considers safe. If she wants to sit & think about a possibly scary new thing – LET HER – even if she wants to hide behind you. Stand still & silent (the thing doesn’t scare YOU! So there is no need for HER to be scared either, and you are her protector – keep thinking those thoughts kindly so that your impatience doesn’t “travel down the leash”) until she decides to ignore or investigate the new thing, and THEN you praise her – add pats or rubs if she is still close enough. THIS is the true meaning of “socialisation” – nothing to do with playing with strange dogs or strange people.
• 13 weeks: Change from the “curious-confident” stage to a 4 weeks “need security” stage. Continue familiarising her with any new “things” in your area.
• 16 weeks: End if familiarisation stage. Last set of booster vaccinations.
• 18-22 weeks: YOU start being coached in a proper training club’s weekly classes, provided Pup LIKES and TRUSTS you (if not, WHY doesn’t she? Stop being impatient!). While you are learning to be an effective trainer, Pup is learning to pay attention regardless of what other dogs & people are doing.
No – DON’T make excuses about “no obedience classes here” – get into a vehicle and TRAVEL to a class. The alternative is for you & Pup to go board with a pro trainer until the trainer is satisfied with your attitude & technique – which is likely to be quite a long, expensive time!
• Add http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/The_GSD_Source to your browser’s Bookmarks or Favorites so that you can easily look up such as rescue groups, feeding, vaccinations, worming, clubs, weights, teething, neutering, disorders, genetics.
I suggest you look in its Links section for such as “Temperament” and “Training Dos & Don’ts” – but they are NOT substitutes for being coached.

At thirty, Sister Bernard can hear the voice of God-strident, furious, and personal. The School of Obedience $11.09 2011 Reprint of 1899 Edition. Full facsimile of the original edition, not reproduced with Optical Recognition Software. "Andrew Murray’s passion for the spiritual well being of Christians shines through in his "School of Obedience." Murray is well-known as a powerful and engaging writer, and "School of Obedience" is no exception. In it, Murray takes traditional Christian ideas about obedience, and recasts them to show believers the true power and importance of those ideas. He emphasizes, in particular, how obedience to God is obedience to a Personal Being, our Creator and Sustainer. He also calls believers to obedience each day and every day. With less than ten chapters, "School of Obedience," is a short essay on the nature of obedience, but one that anyone can profit from reading."-Tim Perrine |

The Blessings of Obedience $5.97 “Obedience is not the most popular word in our vocabulary. We live in a society that is constantly battling the system, fighting for what we want. We’re primarily concerned with how the rules inconvenience us, and we’re looking to see what we can get away with. Obedience is much more than following rules; it’s a state of the heart. Andrew Murray explores the love behind God’s demands and the grace that makes it possible for us to obey. The blessing of complete obedience is your intimate connection with a loving, protective heavenly Father who desires more than anything to give you a rich and fulfilling life. Discover how obedience to God’s plan will put you in the center of His will” |

The Obedience Factor $13.95 “When everything around us is changing constantly, there is one unchangeable, beautiful thing?God’s Word. If we listen to that Word and commit to obey its urgings, life can take on new purpose and deep spiritual satisfaction can be gained. Obedience should not be entered into lightly, however. True obedience in this day and age may cost you, but how sweet the rewards. The Obedience Factor is a conversational teaching book which presents, in part, examples of author Carol Brown’s ongoing journey toward learning the benefits of swift obedience to the Lord and the things to which He calls us. More importantly, the book is one containing revelatory insights about obedience that even surprised the author as they spilled out on paper. If a person is looking for better understanding as to why they should not waste time teetering on the brink of ?Should I or shouldn?t I?? when it comes to stepping into what they believe the Lord is speaking to their heart, The Obedience Factor will fit quite comfortably in their hands. It is the author’s earnest hope that after reading this book people will listen more closely to and become increasingly more at ease with the voice of the Holy Spirit and promptly obey Him.” |

Rally Obedience $119.48 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles Rally obedience (also known as Rally or RallyO) is a dog sport based on obedience. It was originally devised by Charles L. Bud Kramer from the obedience practice of doodling doing a variety of interesting warmup and freestyle exercises. Unlike regular obedience, instead of waiting for the judges orders, the competitors proceed around a course of designated stations with the dog in heel position. The course consists of 10 to 20 signs that instruct the team what to do. Unlike traditional obedience, handlers are allowed to encourage their dogs during the course. There are currently four sanctioning bodies for RallyO in the United States: the American Kennel Club (AKC); the Association of Pet Dog Trainers (APDT); and the newly formed Canine Work and Games (CWags). The United Kennel Club (UKC) added rally obedience to their program as of January 2009. Author: Surhone, Lambert M./ Tennoe, Mariam T./ Henssonow, Susan F. Obedience Training $78.07 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles Obedience training usually refers to the training of a dog and the term is most commonly used in that context. Obedience training ranges from very basic training, such as teaching the dog to reliably respond to basic commands such as sit, down, come, and stay, to high level competition within clubs such as the American Kennel Club and the Canadian Kennel Club, where additional commands, accuracy and performance are scored and judged. Obedience implies compliance with the direction or command given by the handler. For a dog to be considered obedient rather than simply trained in obedience, it must respond reliably each time the command is given, by what is commonly known as its handler. Beyond Obedience $11.99 Beyond Obedience is a revolutionary new training program for you and your dog from one of our country’s foremost animal advocates and holistic practitioners. The idea that your canine companion is a fully emotional being and acutely sensitive to your changing feelings and moods is the foundation of April Frost’s original and highly effective training program. One of the most difficult aspects of training your dog is communicating your intentions clearly. Beyond Obedience is the first book that works on the way you communicate with your dog, providing you with the necessary tools to truly understand how your dog’s mind works and, therefore, how you can create an effective and mutually satisfying relationship.          Drawing on her extensive experiences as an animal behaviorist, Frost teaches you that training your dog should not be a tedious chore limited to exerting physical and psychological control over an animal’s drives, but instead an enriching and spiritually fulfilling experience–gratifying for both human and animal. Frost discusses such essential concepts as mutual respect, unconditional love, mental and emotional discipline, and your expectations and priorities. She shows you how the insights gained from working with your dog can have positive, far-ranging effects on many areas of your life.          Beyond Obedience revolutionizes dog training by addressing the spiritual, physical, and psychological needs of dogs and people, teaching them to communicate effectively through powerful techniques, including visualization and energy work, and offering them valuable insight into the emotional bonds that enrich the lives of animals and their companions. Guidelines Dogs are born knowing how to bark, bite, dig, chew, chase, jump up on one another, eliminate when they need to, and snarl when they feel threatened. It is a challenge to get a dog to suppress or modify his instincts in order to make human existence more pleasant. If the dog reverts, you need to remember that these acts are not malicious; the dog is simply doing the best he can with information he has been given about living with and behaving in a socially acceptable way toward a totally different species. Dogs can learn whatever you can find a way to teach them, so long as it is within their physical capability to perform. Dogs, like humans, take the path of least resistance; they do only what works well and easily to satisfy their needs and desires. If it is a self-rewarding move, they will repeat and escalate the behavior, whether that behavior is in harmony or conflict with your wishes. Every dog has its own point of motivation, a trigger that will evoke a response and awaken its desire to respond to its human. From the Hardcover edition. |
