Why does my puppy wee in the house?

My friend has a 14 week old collie who keeps weeing and poohing in the house. She takes her out in the garden for a long time, sometimes she’s out there over an hour and she still runs in and goes toilet. She will go toilet outside but she always comes in and wees straight away. She gives her a treat and makes a big fuss of her everytime she goes toilet outside. Please help, she’s tried everything.

First, I agree that expecting no accidents from a 14 week old pup is too high of an expectation. And I agree that puppy pads are not very reliable. But it sounds like the puppy is confused about what the expectation is. I have been rescuing and re-homing dogs for 9 years now, and there is one nearly full-proof potty training method I have used successfully with every one of them: crate training.

Crate training involves relying on the fact that a dog will not soil its bedding. Even as young as 8 weeks, a dog has learned from its mother that the sleeping nest is one place where it does not go.

So, in order to crate train your pup, you need to get a Pet Crate with a door that has a catch/lock. It needs to be big enough that the dog can stand up and turn around while completely in the crate. Put soft bedding like a blanket or an old pillow (not goose down!!) in the crate, and put your pup in it to sleep with the door shut. When the pup needs to go, it will whine or scratch on the door of the crate. Let the dog out and immediately take it outside. If you have to, carry it out the first few times, or take it on a lead out the door, but don’t wait–take it out immediately. Set the puppy on the ground and say, “Go potty” in a kind, upbeat voice. When the puppy hits the grass or dirt where you want it to go, it may sniff around a bit. That’s okay; it’s what dogs do. Just say “Go potty” a few more times. As soon as it starts to go, say, “Good potty. Good Dog.” And when the dog is done, say “Good dog! Good Potty!” again. Now it’s playtime (unless it’s the middle of the night); not treat time, however. Treats are for other kinds of training. Play a little with your pup! And that’s how you crate train a dog.

The daily routine then is to take the dog outside through the same door immediately after every nap, after every meal, and when the pup needs to go in the middle of the night. The puppy needs to take all its naps and sleep at night in the crate, at least until it is totally reliable. If you are consistent, pretty soon the puppy will be going to the door that goes to its “potty place” on its own. You just have to let it out. And in a few more weeks, the pup will be coming to you and yapping a “Hello, I need to go out!” bark at you.

One word of caution. Do NOT punish a pup for accidents, especially if the accident is by the door to the potty place. The pup is doing the best it can with its small bladder; it’s your job to get it outside, especially if no doggy door is available.
