how long does puppy housebreaking take?

how long does it take to housebreak a puppy? sometimes there are the moments when he does it outside, and we praise him, and think the turnover has been made then there are time when we get back from a walk… he never did anything and then walks into the house and pees right there in front of us all.. WHY>???

It depends on the dog and you. If you’re training it properly and consistently, about three months. Some dogs just take more, though.

One of my dogs used to do the same. Some dogs just feel the need to mark their territory, and some do it out of insecurity (this is called submissive urination. See below link for tips).

The great thing about dogs is that, unlike humans, they can stop urinating at any time. Once your dog starts peeing, clap loudly next to him.. throw something next to him…anything to get him attention and make him stop. Picking him up and curving him bottom under will also make her stop. Once he has, take him outside. Let him pee outside and then do the praise thing. The important thing is not to yell at him, if only because negative attention is still attention. Once he’s stopped urinating, don’t make eye contact or say anything around him until he’s outside.

Also, make sure you clean up the mess immediately. If it’s on carpet, use something that will also deodorize (you can get this sort of thing from most pet stores). If there’s even the tiniest hint of a scent, he’ll do this again.

You would also benefit from keeping the dog on a leash, even inside. This will give you more control, and you’ll be more likely to notice when the dog is about to pee. Also helps the dog bond with you a little better, so it’s a win-win.
