what stage would you introduce a second dog/pup into your home?

this is more out of curiosity as my dog is no were near ready for another dog/pup yet if he ever is lol. If you had the space and the finances at what stage would you introduce a second pup/dog…ie age of first…training done and is there a point were you think its to late to introduce a Second pup/dog.
Also would you go for same sex/different sex. older/younger same breed or different

I don’t want two puppies and I don’t want to inflict a puppy on a geriatric dog. What I prefer to do is have a trained middle-aged dog help raise a pup and when the middle aged dog has got elderly and died, the dog that was a pup helps to raise the next pup. This is always my plan, and it seldom works out this way LOL! Part of my plan is to avoid having multiple dogs failing at the same time (it can be hard… emotionally, physically and financially), and part of my plan is to have an adult dog all the time who can alert to strangers and such (a puppy cannot be expected to and an elderly dog’s hearing may be going).

Same breed has the advantage of similar playing styles. I have had a herding breed and a mixed hound together, and they could not understand how to play… te hound wanted to wrestle, the herding dog wanted to play tag, they each were frustrated with the other… I got a third dog, and she understood just enough of the other two that she could play with both of them and then they all could play her games.

A lot of breeds may have issues with same-sex aggression, and de-sexed or not doesn’t always make a difference. If you have a choice, opposite sex is almost always a better choice.
