Does anyone know why our family dog, “Princess” has to piss whenever anybody starts to pet her?

I’m the only one she WONT do that with. However, she does hang out with me most of the time. She’s a Dashund, 17 months, hates when females come near me. She’s very protective. It’s really starting to “piss” me off, no pun intended…..

This type of urination is called ‘submissive wetting’. Far from marking territory, what she is actually telling you in doggy language is that she is feeling overwhelmed by the influx of people, and urinating is a signal to you (the dominant pack members) that she is ‘just a baby’and she is acknowledging her lower rank by eliminating in the same way a very tiny puppy would. I bet you she hunkers her body very low and/or rolls over onto her back, too. DON’T yell at her or try to correct this because she really can’t help it. Instead, pointedly IGNORE her when entering the house. When several minutes have elapsed, try calmly interacting. Keep your voice low and soft. Remember, if you are excited, she will be too. But in her case the excitement will prompt this unwanted behavior. If she wets, or looks like she may be about to – go back to ignoring her. When the people around her are calm and unconcerned, she will relax as well, and her submissive wetting problem will resolve.
