Is there an upgrade path from 32 to 64 bit Vista? More importantly, is it worthwhile?

I have a cheapo store bought [packard pell istart] PC, AMD Athlon64 X2 4000+ , if I understand correctly this is a 64 bit processor? but in order to take advantage of that it needs a 64 bit OS?

It came with Vista home premium [which SOUNDS nice, yea?] and I wrongly assumed it would be a 64bit version… D’OH!!!

Firstly what are the benefits of the x64 version? Will windoze itself run [and load] faster? and what knd of software will benefit most from it? Maybe I’m totally barking up the wrong tree and Vista x64 will drain too many resources from a low spec pc?

If it is likely to improve my system performance, is there an official upgrade path? failing that, I’m no friend of Microsoft so any info on a .torrent for a personally tested working non-official version would be appreciated.

I’m also considering upgrading to Linux, but on a dual boot basis initially. Do you know of any 64 bit optimised distros that are available or in the pipeline?

A 64-bit operating system allows the system to conventionally use more than 4 GB of RAM. This is not an issue for most users, although it is quite handy for video and graphics editing. Many games are also increasing their RAM requirements, so one day they will be 64-bit as well.

A 64-bit OS will generally not draw more resources than a 32-bit OS. Depending on the operation it is performing, it may be somewhat faster or slower, but it is not dramatic either way.

At the moment, Microsoft does not provide the ability to do an upgrade from a 32-bit OS to a 64-bit OS. One has to do a clean install. We can’t give out links to warez, so I can’t help you there.

I’m currently using a 64-bit version of Linux, but I don’t think it’s especially optimized for 64-bit, only compiled. I’m using Kubuntu, a derivative of Ubuntu with a KDE interface.
