Pneumonia In Dogs Treatment

Vet Tech-I need you! Sophie is sick…?
I am looking for anyone with experience involving tumors of the nasal cavity and what the prognosis is for these. Has anyone experienced this condition, gone through the tests and the treatment and had a successful recovery?
My dog Sophie, an aussie/huskie mix, has had in the last 3 months Pasteurella pneumonia, and some kind of upper respiratory infection, causing huge yellow white mucous.
She literally chokes on it in the mornings.
She has been on two different antibiotics and no improvement, although her lungs are now clear. She is now getting a little lethargic and not herself.
The vet has now suggested an underlying issue that is causing all of this, and Sophie is scheduled for a rinoscopy (sp?).
Could not find any info on this on veterinarypartner.com.
Thank you,chetco. ![]()
We are very worried.
There are many different nasal tumors that can arise in the dog and each of them carries a different treatment plan and prognosis so it is next to impossible to answer your question until the results of the biopsies are back.
Rhinoscopy is a procedure in which a camera will be inserted into the nasal passages while your dog is under anesthesia. The appearances of the nasal turbinates, the presence of masses, and foreign bodies can be visualized. It is likely that biopsies of the nasal passages will be obtained to look for tumor cells or for fungal culture. It is not uncommon for there to be a lot of bleeding following biopsy because the nasal passages are highly vascularized.
Canine nasal tumors:
Common epithelial tumours: adenocarcinoma, undifferentiated carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma
Common mesenchymal tumours: osteosarcoma, chondrosarcoma
Round cell tumours: lymphoma, mast cell tumour, transmissible venereal tumour, histiocytoma
Uncommon tumours: transitional carcinoma, neuroendocrine tumours, fibrosarcoma, undifferentiated sarcoma, haemangiosarcoma, liposarcoma, leiomyosarcoma, myxosarcoma, rhabdomyosarcoma, malignant fibrous histiocytoma, malignant nerve sheath tumour, malignant melanoma, paranasal meningioma
Unfortunately, very few cancers have complete cures. The condition is best managed with surgery, chemotherapy, and/or radiation therapy depending on the type of tumor. Your vet will be able to present all the options to you once he has all the information. Best of luck to you both.

Atypical Pneumonia $95.59 Atypical pneumonia is a pneumonia not caused by one of the more traditional pathogens. It can be caused by a variety of microorganisms. When developed independently from another disease it is called Primary Atypical Pneumonia. The term was introduced in the 1930s and was contrasted with the bacterial pneumonia caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae, at that time the best known and most occurring form of pneumonia. Distinction between atypical and typical pneumonia, however, is medically insufficient. For the treatment of pneumonia it is important to know the exact causing organism. Moreover, S. pneumoniae has become a relatively lesser important cause Author: Miller, Frederic P./ Vandome, Agnes F./ McBrewster, John Binding Type: Paperback Number of Pages: 128 Publication Date: 2010/04/29 Language: English Dimensions: 5.98 x 9.01 x 0.30 inches |

CommunityAcquired Pneumonia $154.53 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles Communityacquired pneumonia (CAP) is a disease in which individuals who have not recently been hospitalized develop an infection of the lungs (pneumonia). CAP is a common illness and can affect people of all ages. CAP often causes problems like difficulty in breathing, fever, chest pains, and a cough. CAP occurs because the areas of the lung which absorb oxygen (alveoli) from the atmosphere become filled with fluid and cannot work effectively. CAP occurs throughout the world and is a leading cause of illness and death. Causes of CAP include bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites. CAP can be diagnosed by symptoms and physical examination alone, though xrays, examination of the sputum, and other tests are often used. Individuals with CAP sometimes require treatment in a hospital. CAP is primarily treated with antibiotic medication. Some forms of CAP can be prevented by vaccination. Community-Acquired Pneumonia $173.99 Community-Acquired Pneumonia (CAP) refers to pneumonia acquired outside of hospitals or extended-care facilities, and is distinct from Nosocomial or hospital-acquired pneumonia, which is a separate disease entity. It is one of the most common respiratory infections and presents one of the major health problems today, with an incidence that ranges from eight to fifty cases per thousand individuals each year. Mortality is still very high and yet the risk factors are very well known. Many of these are related to antibiotic treatment; delay in administration, inadequacy of empiric antibiotics and lack of adherence to guidelines for treatment are all clearly associated with poor treatment outcomes. Following a description of the epidemiology and microbial etiology of ambulatory and hospitalized CAP, this book provides an in-depth review of the important new advances in therapeutics, including management of drug resistance to the three major classes of antibiotics used for treatment of CAP: β-lactams, macrolides and quinolones. All of them have advantages and disadvantages and these are put into perspective. This book highlights guideline recommendations and presents a balanced analysis to help physicians deliver the highest standard of care. In addition, the authors provide an insight into the 10% of patients who do not respond to antibiotics and could benefit from adjunctive therapies, some still under review. This volume will be welcomed by pulmonologists and all clinicians involved in managing community-acquired pneumonia.   |
