How can I get my chihuahua to play with toys?

My 4 year old chihuahua is a rescue, and she came from an abusive home. I try to get her to play with toys, but she’s afraid of the squeaky type, and she ignores the balls, ropes, and stuffed animals. She has a little plush leopard that she doesn’t play with, she loves it. She brings it to her bed when she sleeps, She shows it of to my Labrador retriever, and she hides her treats under it. She also has a little kong, witch is the closest to a toy she has. She doesn’t actually chew on it, she just licks the kong filling out. Any tips in how to get her to play with toys?

Sure. It requires a bit of training though. You can start by teaching your chihuahua a simple trick. Your can hold a treat in front of her and say “Touch!” Point to a ball or a play object that she hasn’t had a bad experience with (or an experience at all with) and keep at it. You may want to hold the treat near the toy so that she comes near it. Any interaction with the toy at all, including coming close to it should be rewarded. Eventually you can can teach her to play with it with added enthusiasm. Soon she’ll be just as excited as you about the toy and begin to think of toys as positive things. Keep it up with treats and praise. And be patient! Hope this helps!
