does my dog have fleas or worms?

Whenever my dog sleeps in my bed in the middle of the night, when I wake up there are these little dried up red things in my bed. And they only appear when he sleeps in my bed through the whole night, not during the day or when he naps. One night I woke up around 2:00 and the things were in my bed but instead of being dry and red, they were wet and fleshy pink. They are smaller that 1 cm and I don’t see and legs or anything. I don’t let him sleep in my bed anymore. My mom things it’s fleas but I think it’s worms. Does anyone know what they could be??

I’m guessing that your dog has both fleas and worms. What you’re describing sounds like tapeworm segments – they’re usually about the size of a grain of rice right when they’re excreted and then they dry up.

Tapeworms live in the intestines, so you’re right about the worm thing. Dogs get tapeworms from eating fleas, so you’re mom’s probably right about the fleas.

The immature worm lives in the flea, the flea bites the dog, the dog licks the area and swallows the flea (so you may not ever see the flea), and then the tapeworm develops in the dog.

Your Vet can give you a special deworming medication that will kill the tapeworms, but you need to make sure you use Frontline or Advantage on your dog to prevent fleas and treat your home and yard for fleas too if you want to prevent this in the future.
