What is the best way to groom a Shepherd-Collie mix with extremely long and very thick hair?

I use a Slicker Brush, a shed ender, a pin brush and a rake, the dead hair just keeps coming out and seems to never end.

I use a FURminator on my long haired, black German Shepherd. You wouldn’t believe the fur!!! I use a metal toothed rake for spot grooming, as he has a habit of drooling on his chest when he drinks and it causes his fur to tangle and matt some there.

He is 90 lb and is recommended to use a large brush, but they were out when I purchased it and I settled on a medium (which works fine). It was around $40, but I live in Pennsylvania so it might be a little different where you live.

As YoLO so wisely pointed out diet is also VERY important. I feed him a high quality dry kibble and Supplement w/ various essential fatty acids to keep his coat nice and healthy (and glucosamine for his joints). The biggest difference in his coat, however, came from a change from the kibble he was on at the shelter to something nutritious.
